Distributed Acoustic Sensing Technology for Pipeline Leak Detection, Damage Prevention and PIG Tracking – Underlying Technology, System Architectures, How to Install It and Previous Projects
Distributed fiber optic sensing can be deployed parallel to pipelines to continuously monitor liquid and gas leaks, vehicle and digging activity and many other conditions and activities, such as in-line inspection tools. JJ Williams from OptaSense will discuss the underlying technology, system architectures, how to install fiber optic cables and sensing systems on pipelines, with examples from projects around the world. He will also introduce the Fiber Optic Sensing Association (FOSA) as an industry association and resource for the fiber optic sensing market.

Observation and Mitigation of Geohazards from Space
Changing ground conditions are a challenge for pipeline system monitoring. Long pipeline rights-of-way in remote zones can be costly to monitor with aircraft or ground crew walking the line. These methods rely on anecdotal evidence of change and while ``eyes on’’ can be the most trusted method of understanding the ground hazards, satellite methods can provide accurate measurements of ground movement, land cover change, and large area coverage. These methods can more efficiently direct human intervention, remediation, and prevention activities to ensure that resources are directed in the most effective way. To solve problems in pipeline system surveillance, MDA exploits optical and radar monitoring to provide high resolution and coverage of both remote and densely populated areas. From the measurement of induced slumping to charting the ground movement effects from forest fires, MDA’s pipeline monitoring programme present comprehensive, cost effective methods for capturing and predicting ground changes that present risk to the pipeline system. Our presentation shows examples of end to end pipeline monitoring for large (20,000 sq mi and larger) with detailed high resolution measurements of small potential hazards.

Nondestructive Evaluation of Yield Strength, Seam Type, and Toughness of Steel Pipelines
Direct assessment of steel pipelines using nondestructive evaluation (NDE) can provide valuable data for confirming operating pressure, supplementing documentation for vintage assets where material test reports (MTRs) are not available, and determining more asset-specific repair criteria for integrity management programs. Massachusetts Materials Technologies (MMT) LLC provides two complementary solutions for in-ditch material verification of the pipe yield strength, longitudinal seam type, and base metal toughness without any interruption in service or the removal of sample cutouts. In this session, we will discuss the challenges associated with acquiring accurate and reliable NDE properties, provide an overview of our proprietary instruments, and highlight the benefits of applying these solutions for condition assessment, fitness-for-service, and quality control of new construction.
